Senior Internet Use Soars
Thursday, March 19th, 2009According to a report by the Pew Internet and American Life Project the largest jump in Internet usage from 2005 to 2008 was by users age 70 and older. While the penetration rate still lags younger markets the 70 to 74 year old market grew by 19 points to 45% in 2008. Penetration rates for ages 65 to 69 remained high at 56% of the market and users ages 60 to 64 were even higher at 62%.
According to another report by Nielson Internet users over the age of 55 account for nearly one third of the web audience. In addition older users tend to spend more time online than thier younger counterparts. They appear to be visiting health and government related sites as opposed to playing games and watching movies like younger users.
